Mystery shopping is a market research tool used by research organizations to accumulate important information to improve and develop a business, service or product. Mystery shopping is generally conducted by a research company or internally by the company itself to measure the quality of service, products and gather other required information.

A mystery shopper is a person who pretends to be a real customer at an establishment and perform particular tasks such as asking questions, purchasing a product, behaving in a certain manner etc. They are generally given a survey sheet in advance to find out the type of information required by the company.


There are mystery shopping companies that conduct the programmes for customers. Generally they will train the mystery shopper on the techniques and ethics of mystery shopping. It is important to employ an experienced, reliable and accurate mystery shopping company to carry out the task since the information gathered has to be authentic and accurate.
